Product Description

Tales Of Ugetsu' DVD, Kenji Mizoguchi (1953), New & Sealed

Ugetsu monogatari
Tales of a Pale and Mysterious Moon After the Rain (informal literal English title)

'Ugetsu Monogatari' is in many critics 'top 100', right up there with 'Tokyo Story' and 'Seven Samurai'. When I approached it for the first time therefore, I expected something more, but perhaps I have a blind spot in responding much less to Mizoguchi than I do to Ozu and Kurosawa. Their work, even Kurosawa's set in the past, have for me a more vibrant immediacy. If I had to choose a film representing Mizoguchi at his best it would have to be 'Sansho Dayu' a moving study of separation and the effects of circumstance on morality. Although 'Ugetsu' deals with the same themes there is something rather homespun and folksy in their treatment. Nevertheless there is an important additional theme here that lies at the core of the film, that of male obsessiveness. A potter becomes obsessive about the money he can make from his trade, so much so that he becomes almost oblivious to the civil war that is raging around him and its effect on his wife and infant son. His friend, who is something of a buffoon, has an obsessive ambition to become a samurai. How he practically succeeds is played for comedy. In the meantime the potter becomes infatuated with an aristocratic lady who buys his wares, only to find eventually that she is a ghost. I know that the supernatural is the stuff of oriental legend, but here I find it sits rather uneasily in what is after all a film where realism holds sway. I much prefer the all-ghost element of a work like Stanley Kwan's 'Rouge'. Nevertheless there are some fine things in 'Ugetsu' particularly the tracking shots of characters moving in counterpoint to tall spindly reeds by a lakeside, the strange encounter between two boats on misty water and the final landscape shot with the small boy. That 'Ugetsu' is the work of a visual poet is beyond question.
